Sunset Beach

Sunset
Beach is approximately two mile long with a summer average width
of over 200 feet, making it the widest white sand beach on Oahu.
The portion of the beach fronting the beach [park is approximately
one mile long. During the winter months high surf erodes the beach
and narrows it considerable. Park facilities include portable
restrooms and roadside parking.
During the summer months, Sunset Beach is a popular roadside
swimming stop for visitors circling the island, but its major
attraction is its surfing waves during the winter months. Sunset
Beach is one of the best surfing sites in the world, especially
for big waves over ten feet high. It is the home of the Triple
Crown of Surfing, one of the premier events on the professional
surfing tour, and is the preferred site for many other surfing
contests. Surfers the world over consider Sunsets waves to be
among the most dangerous and challenging they have ever ridden.
A few of the activities at Sunset Beach are bodyboarding, surfing,
and swimming
High surf generates dangerous water conditions, including powerful
shorebreaks, longshore currents, rip currents, and backwashes
sweeping across the foreshore. The high surf season normally
occurs during the winter and spring months, beginning in October
and ending in May. Lifeguards are on duty daily. Check with them
before going in the water.
