Kamehame School is a private, co-educational school system in Hawaii that offers pre-school classes through 12th grade. With students now counting over 6,700, it could be noted as the largest independent educational system in the United States in terms of student population. It operates in the state of Hawaii in 3 campuses: Kea’au (Hawaii), Honolulu (Kapalama), Pukalani (Maui).
The school system is being supported by a $6.2 billion trust fund endowed by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last of the Kamehame the Great’s last direct descendant.
It has an admissions policy maintaining that only students with native Hawaiian blood are accepted to the school system. Because of high rate of applicants who are native and non-Native Hawaiians, this exclusivist policy becomes effective. This policy however has been legally challenged recently.
Still another admissions policy, the school system gives special consideration as well to applicants who are orphaned or indigent as stated in the will of the Princess Bishop. However, orphaned or indigent applicants have to prove their native Hawaiian blood before entry to the school.
On top of this favor for indigent/orphaned students, the Schools has various scholarship programs for those in need. It is worth mentioning that Kamehameha Schools is the richest private property owner in Hawaii.
