Kalama Valley is one of the most geographically distinct neighborhoods in Hawaii. The neighborhood is accessible from Kealahou Street when approaching from the south or over the spine of Koko Head Crater when approaching from the north. As you approach the valley, you will notice the gated community, Queens Gate, that consists of mainly golf-course homes. As you near the base of Koko Crater, you will spot the beautiful new developtment of villas, Koko Villas.
Because of the area that the neighborhood is located in, soil movement has been a constant problems that developers must combat. Since the Kalama Valley was the birthplace of the Hawaiian Sovereignty movement in the 1970s, Kalama Valley is a keystone area of Hawaiian politics. During the movement, farmers who were leasing their lands were becoming evicted in an effort to develop more homes. The farmers withstand the evictions for over three months, finally winning their rights to remain farming.
Living in the valley is made easier by the fact that almost everything you need is only a short distance away. The nearest shopping centers are about 5-10 minutes away depending on your location.
