With a population of just over 6,000 residents, Lihue, the largest city of the island of Kauai, serves as the main center of transportation. Acting as the main seaport for the island is Nawiliwili Bay, which receives cargo and cruise ships on a daily basis. Similar to Nawiliwili Bay is the Lihue Airport which receives service from different airlines with flies to neighbor islands and the US Mainland through the cities of Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Seattle. Lihue hosts the island's largest shopping mall, the Kukui Grove Center which includes commercially successful retailers like Macy's, Kmart, Costco, Home Depot, and Wal-Mart. Car dealerships and restaurants are also located on the streets of downtown Lihue.

The annual Kauai Music Festival, Kauai Mokihana Festival, and Malama Ola Festival are hosted by Lihue. Lihue attractions also include the Grove Farm Homestead Museum, Huleia National Wildlife Refuge, Menehune (Alekoko) Fishpond, Ninini Beach, Kaua'i Museum, Niumalu Beach Park, and Niumalu Harbor. Lihue is not only the center of transportation, but is also the main center of education and is home to the University of Hawaii's Kauai Community College, providing residents with a nearby opportunity for education.
