For most purposes, the City and County of Honolulu is the Island of Oahu. Known as the "Gathering Place", Oahu has a land area of 596.7 square miles. It is the center of business and government for the State of Hawaii. Downtown Honolulu is Hawaii's financial center while Waikiki, the world famous tourist destination, is only a few miles away. Smallest of the four counties in geographical size, it has three-fourths of the State's population. Average temperatures range from 700 to 840 F. The rainfall at the coast averages 22 inches per year and the humidity 68%.

Downtown Honolulu contains all Oahu's state and federal government buildings, including the state capitol and Iolani Palace, once home to Hawaii's last few monarchs and still the only royal palace in the USA. Chinatown is a few blocks northwest of the palace; the Aloha Tower and cruise ship terminals are a few blocks west. Southeast of downtown, Waikiki is the epicenter of all things tourist. All the big resorts and much of the city's nightlife are found here. Just southeast of Waikiki, 760ft (230m) Diamond Head rises up as the city's favorite geological landmark. All of these sites are within the boundaries of greater Honolulu. Honolulu International (HNL) is a 9 mile (15km), or about 15 -20 minute drive northwest of downtown. The Ala Moana Center, on Ala Moana Blvd just northwest of Waikiki, is the central transfer point for The Bus, the island's public bus network.

Oahu is the main destination for most visitors to Hawaii. Besides Waikiki, where most visitors stay, Oahu has wonderful beaches, scenic drives and panoramic vistas. Popular attractions are the Arizona Memorial, U.S.S. Missouri, Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Polynesian Cultural Center, Bishop Museum and Hanauma Bay.
