Seven miles south of Kailua-Kona sits a small Island Community named Keauhou. The Island of Keauhou is rich in Hawaiian history and is home to a mere 2,500 residents. The Island of Keauhou is known for its sunny weather and evening rainfalls. This ideal weather has helped to keep the Islands main production of coffee and fruit farms in full working order. Many companies on the Island offer charters for scuba and snorkeling that operate during the evening hours. Beach goers can enjoy watching manta rays that are known to swim in shallow water, and other marine animals that swim up and greet people while swimming in the ocean.
Residents who live in Keauhou enjoy the advantages of the Islands isolation from other larger resorts and the breath taking views. Keauhou is also home to the burial grounds of Lekeleke and the Battle of Kuamoo. The battle of Kuamoo is legendary for being the islands first clash between foreigners and native Hawaiians who disagreed upon the advancement of the area. Over three hundred people lost their lives during the Battle of Kuamoo, which helped make the Island sacred and highly revered by the locals and visitors alike.
Residents who prefer the distance of other populated areas, still enjoy shopping at the local Keauhou Shopping Center and Farmers Market. The open- air shopping center provides shopping, dining, entertainment, and a state-of-the-art seven-screen theater.
