Makapuu Beach with Rabbit
Makapuu Beach
You will find Makapuu Beach “down wind” from Makapuu Point, the most eastern point of Oahu. This gorgeous expanse of beach is found at the bottom of a sea cliff, surrounded by lava points. It would be hard to find a more spectacular setting as this. Makapuu Beach is also famous for as far back as 1933, for its perfect bodysurfing and boarding beaches. This is due to the fact that the waves break in the middle of the bay creating an excellent surface for long perfect rides.
Makapuu Beach also sports some spectacular views above the beach. From the beach you can see Waimanalo Bay, as well as the two islands just off shore. One island is called Kaohikaipu, known to locals as Black Rock, and the larger island is called Manana, or rather, Rabbit Island. This last island use to boast a large population of rabbits, but today there are none to be found. Instead, both islands are now sanctuaries for seabirds.
Makapuu Bay
Whether you come to Makapuu Beach and the surrounding area to watch the water sports, or to try your hand at bird watching, this is the place to enjoy those activities and more. However, as always, check with the lifeguard stations that are open every day to see if the conditions are safe.
